Planning a class set

How many drones does your class need?

Robolink recommends one drone for every two students, or one each for groups under 10. So a 12-pack covers a class of 24 and an 18-pack a class of 36, spare parts included.

The company behind it

About Robolink

CoDrone EDU and its Smart Controller beside a laptop running Blockly
Robolink

Robolink is a San Diego company that makes coding robots and drones for education. CoDrone EDU is its classroom drone, and it also makes Zumi, a self-driving car that teaches artificial intelligence.

Its free Robolink Learn lessons take students from their first flight to block coding and Python, and the lessons are mapped to ISTE and CSTA standards. The REC Foundation names CoDrone EDU an official drone of its Aerial Drone Competition.

Robolink says its products are used in more than 9,000 US schools. iDesign Solutions ships from Buffalo, New York to schools, districts and families in eight states, prices in US dollars and accepts school purchase orders and tax-exempt orders.

From the box to the first flight

How CoDrone EDU works in class

  1. 1

    Charge, pair and pre-flight check

Charge the batteries, about an hour each, and put two AA batteries in the Smart Controller. Robolink suggests two batteries per drone for a one-hour class, or three for longer, so each classroom pack ships with four per drone. Robolink's Before You Fly video covers the safety routine.

  2. 2

Code it in Blockly or Python

Students start with block coding and move to Python when they are ready. Blockly runs on Chromebooks, Macs and Windows computers; Python works on Mac and Windows. The drone connects over USB and the lessons are free on Robolink Learn.

  3. 3

    Fly, test and fix

Each flight lasts about 7 to 8 minutes, and Robolink says up to 10 drones can fly in one classroom. When something breaks, almost every part can be replaced, from propellers and motors to the frame.

Zumi is Robolink's buildable self-driving car, "the car that learns as you learn". Students assemble it around a Raspberry Pi Zero and a camera, then use it to learn how artificial intelligence and machine learning work: computer vision to see objects, navigation, driving with sensors, and training a data model of their own.

It codes in Blockly or Python and runs from a Chromebook, Mac, Windows PC, iPad or Android tablet. Robolink recommends it for ages 10 and up, grades 6 to 12, and its lessons include obstacle avoidance, face detection and sign detection. The Zumi RoboCar was a CES 2019 Best of Innovation honoree in Robotics and Drones.

We sell Zumi, the Zumi Classroom Set of 10, the Zumitown mat, the driving school mat, activity cards and spare motors, all in US dollars.

Questions

CoDrone EDU for US schools: common questions

Answers based on Robolink's own published specifications and guidance, the REC Foundation, and on how we sell in the US. Still stuck? Contact us and we will help.

What is CoDrone EDU?

CoDrone EDU is a programmable drone made by Robolink for learning in the classroom. Students fly it with its Smart Controller, then code it in Blockly or Python and use its seven sensors, the lights and the sound from their own programs.

What age or grade is it for?

Robolink lists CoDrone EDU for ages 12 and up on its product page and for grades 4 and up on other pages. The REC Foundation recommends its Aerial Drone Competition for ages 10 to 18.

How do students code it?

In Blockly, a block coding editor, and in Python. Robolink Learn has free lessons for both, from the first flight through to sensors and autonomous flight.

Does it work on Chromebooks or iPads?

Robolink says Blockly works on Chromebooks, Macs and Windows computers with a USB port, and Python works on Mac and Windows but not on a Chromebook. CoDrone EDU is not compatible with iPads or tablets.

How long does it fly, and how many batteries do we need?

About 7 to 8 minutes per battery, with about an hour to recharge. Robolink recommends at least two batteries per drone for a one-hour class, or three for longer sessions, which is why each classroom pack includes four per drone.

How many drones can fly in one room?

Robolink says up to 10 CoDrone EDU drones can fly in one classroom without their signals interfering.

Is it safe to fly indoors?

CoDrone EDU is built for classroom flying and weighs 54.8 g. Robolink's own safety guide, Before You Fly, is linked in the Getting started section of this page.

Does it have a camera?

No. CoDrone EDU has no camera. Students work with its seven sensors instead: gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, optical flow, front and bottom range, and color.

What comes in each classroom pack?

The 12-pack has 12 drones and controllers, 48 batteries, 24 chargers, 12 propeller sets, 2 motor sets and 2 frame sets. The 18-pack has 18 drones and controllers, 72 batteries, 36 chargers, 18 propeller sets, 3 motor sets and 3 frame sets. The table above lists every item.

What does the PD include?

The PD packs add Robolink's Getting Started professional development, a two-hour online course for up to 12 educators.

Is it used in the Aerial Drone Competition?

Yes. The REC Foundation names CoDrone EDU an official drone of the Aerial Drone Competition, and lists CoDrone EDU and its JROTC edition among the approved drones for 2026-27.

Can students repair it?

Yes. Robolink designed it so almost every part can be replaced except the internal boards and the bottom chassis. Propellers, motors, frames and batteries are sold separately.

What warranty does it have?

A single CoDrone EDU comes with a 1-year warranty. The 12 and 18 classroom packs, with or without PD, come with a 2-year warranty.

Is it NDAA Section 889 compliant?

Yes. Robolink states that CoDrone EDU is 889-compliant.

Do we need a competition field to start?

No. The REC Foundation says a practice field is not necessary, and that new teams start with pool noodles, hula hoops and boxes. Teams typically practice 2 to 4 hours a week after school.

Which states do you ship to?

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Washington, Oregon, California and Indiana. A single drone ships for a $25 flat rate, and orders from $500, including every classroom pack, ship free.

Do you accept school purchase orders?

Yes. We accept purchase orders from schools and districts, and every price on this page is live in US dollars. Contact us and we will quote against your PO process.

What tax-exempt document do you need?

New York: a governmental purchase order. New Jersey: an official purchase order or letterhead. Pennsylvania: form REV-1220. Oregon and New Hampshire have no sales tax, and we do not collect sales tax on orders shipped to Indiana.

Why is there sales tax on a Washington or California quote?

Neither state generally exempts schools from sales tax, so it is added to school orders there.

Can I return it?

New, unopened items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, less a 20% restocking fee. If the mistake was ours, the refund is in full and we pay return shipping. See our return policy.
